Today I Wrote a Screenplay! // Cozy Writing Update!

Hello everyone!

In my Advanced Creative Writing class (one of my last two classes before I graduate on July 1st! Yay!) we had to write something that wasn’t in our regular genre (in this case, meaning fiction, non fiction, poetry, screenwriting) and then we will later have to write a second piece to inform the first IN our regular genre.

Now, as many of you know, fiction is my preferred method of storytelling. That’s my consentration for my degree. But because I have a concentration, that means I had to pick something outside of what I normally did.

Talk about cutting off my hands!

First I started out with poetry. I had it in my head that it would be such a romantic idea to be like Edgar Allan Poe and pen both stories and poetry with equal skill. But as I was thinking about the poems I would write for class, I realized that maybe screenwriting was something that would suit me better. My teacher told me it was totally cool to switch if I wanted, since we’re still in the early days of the class. So today, I wrote a screenplay!

I wanted to do something in the fantasy genre that, in terms of theme, were reminiscent of Henrik Ibsen (A Doll’s House) and Tennessee Williams (A Streetcar Named Desire). I want to explore the idea of following tradition vs not following tradition, and of children repeating the mistakes of their parents. It makes me feel like such a cingey caricature of of what people might expect an author (or artist of any variety, really) might be like.

“Oh look at my themes! my motifs! Look how deep they are!”

But its how it is. Sorry!

I finished writing it not that long ago, and I know it’s probably going to need a lot of help from my teacher and my peers in class, but I’m excited to see how it comes out. I was thinking it might be cool to write plays and see if my local theatre company would be willing to perform them! In my head I have it dressed up like I would routinely go with my friends and my husband to the theatre to watch a piece of my writing come to life! It probably won’t happen, because I have no idea how this kind of thing would work, but it’s still worth the phone call to find out!

Anyway, we’re probably going to go play Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom some more, so I’ll see you guys next time!
