Writing on a Rainy Day 🌧️ ☁️ // A Land of Shadow and Thorn Writing Update
Today was so disgustingly hot for October, it was really bad for my anxiety. I get Seasonal Affective Disorder really bad when its hot, so the summer months are torture if I’m not able to go in and cool off when I need to, and the fact that it’s bleeding over into my favorite month is unacceptable. However, it was nice to have some rain. We’re going through something of a drought and I think the little thunderstorm we had today fixed that. Or helped, at the very least.
Thunder began rumbling shortly after I came upstairs to work on my novel. I love it when it rains and I have time to write—it feels like the perfect -ahem- storm of creative opportunity. I had on a good playlist from YouTube while I worked, occasionally hearing the sound of rain outside my window and thunder rolling across my neighborhood. Rainy and generally stormy weather are my favorites, aside from a good snow when I don’t have to go anywhere.
I made some Traditional English Tea and steeped it in my star-shaped tea infuser, and had my favorite writing companion—Chip! I love my Chip mug pretty much more than anything and he’s one of my top two favorite mugs that I couldn’t live without. It’s so fun to have him sitting at my side as I put fingers to keyboard and write my stories. It gives me an enchanted feeling, as if I’m in a fairytale where the dishware comes to life. That might be silly (and maybe come off as pretty delusional) but there’s so little whimsy in everyday life that I like to try and infuse it where I can.
I ended up getting a lot of really solid work done, and I’m proud of myself! Normally during the week I’m exhausted by the time I get to my keyboard to write. Saturdays are when I do most of my work. It’s easier and more fun when I’m refreshed from a good long night’s sleep and have time to slowly wake up in the morning the way I like to do. During the week I don’t usually get that luxury, but on the weekends its something I like to indulge in. I love my tea and a good book in the morning!
Here’s my wrap-up for this lovely stormy night’s worth of writing!
Project: A Land of Shadow and Thorn

Things accomplished in real life: Not a whole lot, actually. I’ve been super anxious lately and I think sitting down to write kind of cleared some of it out of my brain. I think that’s how you know you’re meant to do something, if it gives you a sense of peace that literally nothing else is able to do. I’m very excited to work more on my thesis novel, but because this is a weekday and I have a lot to do earlier in the day I’m so exhausted I’m half falling asleep at my keyboard.
Things accomplished in fiction: We’re about halfway through this important chapter, which is great because it turns out its going to be a long one. We’ve got some big, important stuff to do! Also, I’ve reached the 10k minimum of new material for my Thesis 1 class so I officially have something to turn in for my first submission next week, though I’m going to keep working hard to finish more before then!
The post is a little shorter than I would’ve wanted, but I’m so tired after getting all that work done and really just want to lay around and watch TV for the rest of the night, so I’m going to end this here! I love doing these little writing updates and I hope you enjoy reading them!
I’ll see you guys next time!
